Today is a special milestone for Lyla, my beloved dog, as she turns ten.
Lyla came into my life at a time of deep sorrow, just weeks after my mother passed away. We had moved to Australia to spend time with our aging parents, leaving our dogs in the U.S., and I greatly missed the joy and love that dogs bring into one’s life.
Lyla is a unique character. She’s incredibly smart, playful, persistent, and has a mind of her own. She communicates her needs clearly, whether it’s wanting to go out, come in, or even when her ball is stuck under the sofa. These traits that I cherish can sometimes be challenging for others. She can be demanding and overly excited, and her intelligence sometimes gets her into trouble. But I’ve learned to see her quirks as part of her strengths and appreciate who she is, rather than focusing on what can be annoying.
What if we focused on what makes those around us special instead of what frustrates us?
This perspective extends to the people (and pets) in our lives. Everyone has a unique role and brings something special, even if it’s not always immediately apparent. We have a choice: focus on what annoys us or appreciate the joy and uniqueness they bring.
In celebrating Lyla, I’m reminded to appreciate the strengths and unique qualities in those around us. It’s a choice that can transform our relationships and enrich our lives. Here’s to many more years of joy with Lyla and all those who bring light into our lives.
