Focus on the Things You Can Control: Embracing My 15%

Focus on the Things You Can Control

In our professional and personal lives, challenges can often leave us feeling overwhelmed and powerless. In the past week I have heard this often and it reminded me of Martin Seligman’s definition of the opposite of optimism being helplessness and of the My 15% concept.

Martin Seligman, the father of Positive Psychology, explains that repeated exposure to uncontrollable events leads us to believe that future outcomes are out of our hands, that we are helpless. Learned helplessness, can lead to passivity and depression. Conversely, Seligman introduced the idea of learned optimism, where individuals can cultivate a proactive response to life’s challenges by focusing on elements they can control. This is where the My 15% principle comes into play, it encourages us to identify and leverage whatever control we have, often about 15%, to make a difference in the outcomes we face.

The My 15%  concept is straightforward yet powerful. It asserts that no matter how deterministic a situation might seem, there is always a segment—be it as small as 15%—where we can exert influence. Whether it’s changing our response to a colleague’s feedback, managing our time more efficiently, or simply choosing to engage with our work with a more positive attitude, that 15% can be a game changer.

Strategies for Implementing My 15%

To effectively implement My 15% in your life, start by asking yourself: What aspects of this situation can I influence? What can be my 15% contribution to solving the problem? Where do I have the freedom to act without more resources and authority?  It could be your mindset, your response, or even your preparation for predictable challenges. Here are some tips:

  • Reflect: Take a moment to analyze past situations where you felt helpless and identify what could have been within your control.
  • Plan: Set small, achievable goals that align with the areas you can control.
  • Act: Take proactive steps, no matter how small, to influence the outcome positively.

The Benefits of an Optimistic Approach

Adopting an optimistic outlook through My 15%, and moving towards action, can significantly enhance your professional life. Studies have shown that optimism is linked to better career success, higher resilience, and improved problem-solving capabilities. By focusing on the fraction of situations you can change, you reinforce a positive mindset that transforms challenges into opportunities for growth.

Every challenge comes with a silver lining of control. By identifying and maximizing your 15%, you not only overcome the paralyzing effects of learned helplessness but also pave the way for a more empowered and optimistic approach to life.
