The One Thing You Can Always Control

Leadership skills: So much is out of our control. But one thing remains firmly within our grasp: how we choose to show up.

In these turbulent times, so much is out of our control. But one thing remains firmly within our grasp: how we choose to show up.
Our response, our attitude, and our actions are always within our control.

Pause.

Catch your breath. Give yourself the space to show up as your best. Ask yourself:

  • Who do you want to be?
Reflect on your values and what matters most to you right now.
How do you want to show up at work, at home, and in your community?
What kind of leader do you want to be, and how would others describe you if you were showing up that way?
  • What behaviors will reflect that?
Identify the specific behaviors, habits, and routines that align with your values and the kind of leader you want to be.
Visualize what this looks like in practice. What would someone observing you see or hear?
Create new habits if needed. Lean into your strengths. What do you already do well that you can build on?
  • How can you stay aligned in the moment?
Notice what gets in your way: negative self-talk, assumptions, or unhelpful patterns.
Practice catching these moments, checking in with yourself, and changing course when needed. Try the 3 Cs: Catch, Check, Change.
Every challenge is an opportunity to reset and realign.
  • Step back and ask: How am I truly showing up?
Your actions do not always create the impact you intend.
Gain insight through feedback and self-reflection. Are your actions having the effect you hoped for?
Is there a gap between how you see yourself and how others experience you?
Identify one or two small changes that can help realign your leadership with your values so you can show up as your best, even in difficult times.

This approach lies at the heart of the CORE framework, a strategy for leading yourself so you can more effectively lead others.

Clarify. Operationalize. Reflect. Evaluate.
These four steps help you build the self-awareness, consistency, and alignment essential for leading with intention in every part of your life.

You begin by identifying your core values and what matters most. You bring that clarity into action. You reflect on your patterns and assumptions. And you evaluate whether your actions are having the impact you intended.

The CORE strategy offers a steady compass.

It helps you lead with clarity, courage, and intention, amplifying your impact and helping you navigate even the most uncertain times.
