When Everything Feels Uncertain, Try This

Sunset over the water

The past few weeks have been challenging for many, with job losses, financial instability, and a deep sense of uncertainty. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by what’s beyond our control. But even in difficult times, we have a choice: we can notice what’s missing—or we can choose to notice what remains.

Personally, I’ve found solace in small things. Last week, I mentioned wearing a boot for plantar fasciitis. While it’s inconvenient, I’m grateful it’s my left foot, so I can still drive. I’m also grateful for the slow healing I am starting to see each day. These little shifts in perspective don’t make everything better, but they help me stay grounded.

Gratitude doesn’t require us to ignore hardship, it invites us to hold both challenge and appreciation at the same time. To acknowledge pain and notice beauty. Simple pleasures like time with loved ones, the comfort of home, or even a quiet breath can be anchors in the storm.

If you’re struggling, here are a few ways to gently cultivate calm and gratitude:

  • Mindful Reflection: Take a few moments each day to reflect on what you’re grateful for. Write them down or share them with someone.
  • Breathing Exercises: A few slow, steady breaths can calm your nervous system and bring you back to center.
  • Connect with Nature: Step outside or look out a window. Nature has a way of reminding us we’re part of something bigger.
  • Stay Connected: Reach out to someone. Even a brief message can remind you that you’re not alone.
  • Focus on What You Can Control: Notice what’s within your influence, and gently let go of what isn’t.

Lately, I’ve been paying more attention to sunsets. No matter what kind of day it’s been, the sun still sets, quietly, reliably, beautifully. It’s a reminder that even when things feel like they’re falling apart, the world keeps turning. There’s still light. There’s still beauty. There’s still something to be grateful for.

What’s one thing you’re grateful for today?
